Abstract
Definitions of dyslexia are many and various. Some suggest that dyslexia affects only those of average intelligence or more. Some are so vague they could describe almost anyone. Many including the British Psychological Society definition (1999) seem to preclude the possibility of having dyslexia at an early age. Research however, tells us that it is likely that dyslexia is genetic and therefore dyslexia exists in the child from time of birth and before. This paper looks from an early years perspective at assessment and intervention, and attempts to reconceptualise dyslexia in a positive and inclusive context in line with current legislation.
