Mathematics and dyslexia: Classroom experience

Per Berggren and Maria Lindroth

Tullinge, Sweden

Abstract

Dyslexia seriously affects the possibility of learning and working with mathematics. The difficulties dyslexic students face are more than just reading comprehension. A student with dyslexia has problems in one or more of the following areas. All of these problems adversely affect learning and working with mathematics: Transposition problems; symbol uncertainty; spatial awareness; sequencing problems; short-term and working memory; long-term memory - times tables!!!; concept formation; anxiety, stress and self-image. The latter is a cumulative problem. More failure, more anxiety, poorer self-image, more failure. This underlines the importance of early diagnosis of dyslexia.
