Creating a whole age approach to dyslexia

Steve Alexander

British Dyslexia Association stevea@bda-dyslexia.demon.co.uk

Abstract

This contribution will demonstrate that adult dyslexics are the vast majority of the dyslexic population but are often an uncoordinated and disparate community. The advent of the Disability Discrimination Act places clear responsibilities on employers to make reasonable adjustments in the workplace for dyslexic employees but levels of prejudice make disclosure of dyslexia an act of personal judgement. The BDA wishes to embrace all parts of the dyslexic community and ensure adults have a clear voice in the organisation and are enabled to reach their full and undoubted potential. The charity's campaign and our work in making Jobcentre plus more dyslexia friendly will be showcased. Strong projects on the ground that have been run by the BDA will be reviewed to show how our practice in promoting and enabling employment of dyslexic people can and has informed our national policy and campaigning work. The whole thrust of employability is a massive and open-ended field of research and the presenter will cite achievements to date and the steps we may all need to consider next.
