Abstract
Although it is clear that dyslexia is characterised by an increasing lag in reading, compared to chronological age controls, there is some debate whether this quantitative difference is associated with qualitative differences in 'reading profile'. Data from a longitudinal study of dyslexia will be presented that suggest that there are qualitative differences related to word frequency, word length and the learning and processing of phonological and orthographic complexities. The interpretation of the differences in terms of a theory of 'componential mapping'and the consequences for treatment (Van der Leij and Van Daal, J. Learning Dis., 32, 1999) will be discussed.
