Abstract
This presentation will present a review of the visual problems that can affect learning, using a relatively holistic model that acknowledges the effects of vision problems on balance, co-ordination and motor function, and based on the author's own experience in working with some 8,000 children over a ten year period. The model thus developed will be used to describe treatment protocols that have been successfully used in the authors practice and will promote a best-practice model for referral to optometry, and use of optometrists in the multidisciplinary management of specific learning difficulties. This workshop should also provide teachers and educational psychologists with much useful information on the educational approaches that can minimise the impact of visual disorders on learning, and will incorporate reviews of successful optometric intervention in other countries.
