Abstract
WESForD aims to provide screening, assessment, intervention procedures and materials enabling Key Stage 1 teachers to identify and meet the needs of potentially dyslexic pupils, using principle of ongoing assessment rather that 'one-off' testing. Resulting full profile of 'at risk' pupils enables teachers to identify dyslexia and design interventions. Materials include a Manual of Guidance, a Phonological Skills Resource File, and a further Dyslexia Resources File (for KS2 teachers upwards). In Phase 1, pupils at risk were identified at the end of Y1 (first term of Yr2) via questionnaire and phonological skills test. They were then supported via the Phonological Skills Programme. On testing at the end of the Spring term in Y2, those with persisting difficulties move to Phase 2 where further assessment leads to the identification of dyslexic profile. Phase 3 involves the planning of interventions at start of KS2 using the Dyslexia Resources File of materials. The initial pilot involved 12 schools (435 pupils screened; 44.83% on Phase 1; 4.5% identified as dyslexic at Phase 2). Second pilot now being carried out. Extremely positive responses from teachers involved.
