Abstract
Disability Discrimination legislation requires that 'reasonable adjustment' is made by schools, colleges and universities to prevent placing disabled learners at a 'substantial disadvantage' compared to others. Dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties are defined as disabilities in the Act. The DRC Code of Practice makes particular reference to the need to provide special arrangements for assessments. The paper will discuss: The purpose of special assessment arrangements The range of special assessment arrangements available to dyslexic learners from primary school to University, explore: The matching special arrangements provision to the individual, including ICT use The way forward in assessment techniques The need for School - university liaison. and will include specific examples of the application of special assessment arrangements and refer to publications by SQA and CEC Education Dept on special assessment arrangements together with Dyslexia in Higher Education: policy, provision and practice (report of National Working Party, 1999).
