Abstract
The spectrum of specific learning difficulties will be illustrated by a series of studies comparing the performance of individuals assessed as dyslexic with that of comparable children assessed as having deficits affecting attention (ADD), speech and language, emotion and behaviour, and general learning or intelligence (MLD). The data reported will concentrate on group differences and similarities in tasks measuring reading ability, phonological awareness, working memory, freedom from distraction, verbal and non-verbal ability, and creativity. Single case and group studies will be presented viewing the learning styles in spelling and relations with cognitive development within individuals assessed as having dyslexia, general learning difficulties, dyspraxia and moderate learning difficulty. A framework for specific learning difficulties including dyslexia will be presented, and proposals made for key future research, assessment and learning.
