Abstract

We report findings from a longitudinal study examining the specificity of phonological representations in a group of school-age dyslexic children and reading level and age-matched normally reading controls. Taking picture naming as an index of phonological representation specificity, a computerised naming task was developed comprising 40 names familiar to 7-year-olds that systematically varied word length and word frequency while holding other psycholinguistic factors constant. Naming difficulties were probed at two time points, two years apart, using a series of tasks based on the picture names. These include: phonological awareness tasks, auditory-visual lexical decision and nonword repetition. Specific relationships between naming difficulties for particular words and performance in phonological processing tasks based on these words will be presented. Of particular interest is the developmental trajectory of phonological representation specificity for the different groups, the extent to which dyslexic children show syllable and rhyme deficits in the presence of well-specified phonological representations and the degree to which lexical factors can explain which words are less well specified.
