Phonological Deficit: Its role as a causal theory

Yvonne Griffiths

University of Essex ymg@essex.ac.uk

Abstract

Starting from the perspective of the phonological deficit hypothesis, the paper will address the following issues: To what extent are the four causal theories - phonological deficit, magnocellular deficit, cerebellar deficit and hemispheric-interaction deficit - complementary or incompatible? What coverage of the data does each theory have? What critical data could decide between the competing theories? How should researchers in the different theories interact? What are the prospects for an integrated theory of dyslexia?
