Hands On Maths Workshop

Abstract

It's the way we think. Great ideas, excellent spatial awareness, and a flair for creativity are all reasons to celebrate being dyslexic. Now use that to accelerate your maths understanding by applying your strengths: Do you have an inkling of what the maths problem is about? Build up a picture in your mind's eye. Model the problem with your hands. Have you got more ideas? Now create a mental framework. Can you apply your new knowledge to a different area? Finally explain how you did it - to your friends, students, colleagues. Walk away from this workshop confident that you can multiply double figure numbers together easily. Be able to manipulate fractions and understand why it works out right. The workshop will consist of a presentation, followed by an interactive session to demonstrate these skills. The workshop promotes the use of methods advocated by Professor Sharma; the Dyslexia Institute, and the Bedfordshire Education Authority. Hand-out notes will be provided along with sources of further information.
