The development of the TEST-D: Trinity Early Screening Test for Dyslexia

Abstract

Research evidence suggests that the earlier Specific Learning Difficulties are identified, the greater are the chances of compensating dyslexics. No Early Screening Test normed on Irish children currently exists. The TEST-D battery is theoretically eclectic, with predictions from Cerebellar, Phonological and Speed of Processing Deficit Theory well represented. Many sub-tests are highly innovative and activity based. In this preliminary iteration, a great deal of redundancy is built into the number of subtests and subtest items. Available with the prototype battery are a Training Manual for all participating data gatherers (all trained Learning Support Teachers), a subtest score-book and a Test Administrators Manual. A pilot study using 100 children (employing 20 teachers, 10 urban and 10 rural, trained in test administration), provided feedback on item administration and determined some subtest changes to the TEST-D Battery. A sample of 1000 children aged 4 years to 6 years 6 months are currently completing the TEST-D Battery. These children will subsequently be followed up to determine their at-risk status for Dyslexia. Factor-analytic statistical tests and step-wise regression analyses will then be conducted to determine the best predictors from the initial TEST-D battery. These will survive to the TEST-D Prototype 2, in a further stage at predicting those children who are at risk for Dyslexia.
