Abstract

A group of pre-school children were followed for a year from the age of 3 years 8 months till the age of 4 years 8 months. They were given a set of language tasks and a set of phonological awareness tasks (at the level of the syllable, the rime and the single phoneme) at three points in time. A set of multiple regressions were performed to examine the relationships between these skills. The children in this sample are also compared to two further groups of children of the same age: a group of children with speech impairments, and a group of children with a family history of dyslexia. The results are discussed in the context of recent theories of the development of the relationship between phonological representations and phonological awareness.
