The BDA International Conference 2001 at the University of York was a major success. Nearly 1000 delegates heard speakers from all over the world deliver papers whose topics ranged from the state-of -the-art brain research to the intensely personal and practical.
At the Festive Dinner Sir Jackie Stewart began his speech with the words, "If you are not dyslexic - you'll never know what it feels like!".
This was a salutary lesson to all of us. Presenters, organisers and participants were all focussed on improving the lot of people with dyslexia. Involved as we are it is necessary to be reminded every so often that our subject is someone else's life.
If you were there we hope that this web site and associated CD-ROM will enable you to revisit those papers you attended and catch up with those you missed. If you were not able to attend we hope that it will be a clear demonstration of the immense strides that have been made since we had to regularly defend ourselves against those who did not 'believe in' dyslexia.
We hope that you will then agree with what Lindsay Peer said at the BDA Multilingual Conference in Manchester:
"The Way Forward must be determined by
- What we believe on ethical and moral grounds relating to equity and human rights MUST happen
- How our knowledge, skills and understanding tell us it CAN happen."
We also hope it will make you very eager to come to the next conference. For dates and venue watch the BDA Web site.
Mike Johnson, Manchester Metropolitan University, July, 2001
