Abstract
This session is a joint venture between two speech and language therapists who are involved in assistive technology in the UK and in Sweden, respectively. The workshop intends to cover aspects of assessment for the use of assistive technology to support those with dyslexia. Assessment results will be linked to the special characteristics of different types of software. Areas of universal design will be examined with particular emphasis on multiple representations of content, options for expression, control, engagement and motivation. Difficulties for dyslexics tend to arise in text-based situations and the wealth of technology on offer can be confusing. It is important to consider the most suitable in-put and out-put methods, ease of use, growth potential and reliability. We aim to examine differences and similarities in our work practices in Sweden and the United Kingdom. What can we learn from one another? What are the political conditions for intervention in this field in the two countries? One case study from a work-place accommodation in Sweden and another one from a university setting in the UK will be compared and discussed. Tips and tricks that have been tried in both countries will be provided. An on-line database has been developed in the UK to provide a resource of the types of assistive technology available with links to reviews and other websites. Advice about which websites can help decision making will be included.
