Abstract

For some years we have argued that a cost-effective procedure for supporting dyslexic children is that of Screening--Assessment--Support. A screening test is a quick test intended for large scale use in the school or workplace. Those screened as 'at risk' may then be referred for an 'in depth' diagnostic assessment by a specialist. On the basis of the assessment a support system may then be determined. In this talk we outline the characteristics and evaluations of the Dyslexia Early Screening Test, the Dyslexia Screening Test, the Dyslexia Adult Screening Test and the Preschool Early Screening Test. Each test is designed for use by a workplace professional, takes around 30 minutes to complete, and comprises a set of 10 or 11 subtests, designed to be fun to do and to cover a range of skills and attainments thought to be diagnostic of dyslexic and/or reading failure. The test yields a profile of abilities on the sub-tests together with an overall quantitative 'at risk' index based on extensive norms for UK children and adults. The at risk index may be used to justify referral to a specialist, and the profile highlights the strengths and weaknesses, thereby informing the development an individual support scheme. Evaluations to date have been very positive.
