Self assessment of study and learning difficulties

Mary N. Haslum

Abstract

Interview and assessment of 135 dyslexic students in Higher Education has contributed to the development of an online Self-Assessment of Study and Learning Difficulties (SASLD). SASLD is currently available to registered students at the University of the West of England via a Learning Resources Web. Students tick statements and respond to open ended questions about their learning difficulties, coping strategies and learning support needs online. They can download or print out their reports to inform discussions with academic tutors and learning support services or to take to an educational psychologist's assessment (to support an application for the Disabled Student's Allowance). Summary data from SASLD can be used to inform policy and practice with respect to the provision of learning support within a University. It can also be used to refine and develop the SASLD itself on a periodic basis. SASLD provides guided links to web based learning support sites both within and outside the institution. Students can access the Learning Resources Web from home and from the University.
