Abstract

C. SUMMARY OF PROPOSAL: Phonological awareness is a fundamental and critical component of literacy learning. This short course provides an historical overview of reading methodologies, examines findings of current research which establishes the important role of phonological awareness in learning how to read and spell, and demonstrates methods for teaching of phonological awareness skills. This course will also describe techniques for teaching children to read that are correlated with the National Literacy Standards for the UK.
