Abstract
'Paired Reading' has long been considered to be instrumental in the development of the reading skills of the average child. Can 'Paired Reading' also be adapted to target the needs of the dyslexic child? In how far can such techniques be considered to be effective? An experiment involving 94 parents and their children was carried out by the Education Division, Malta during the Spring term of 2000. Consideration of the factors which could be impeding dyslexic individuals from developing their reading skills appropriately are given primary consideration. How can a dyslexic child develop reading skills more effectively - how can he be made aware that his problems are not unique, how can strategies of phonological awareness be mediated via parents? These are some of the aspects which will be discussed in this paper. The manner in which parental sessions were structured and adapted to include tasks of phonological awareness will be outlined. The procedures included to enhance the development of reading skills of the dyslexic child wil be illustrated. A video of some of the activities will be shown to demonstrate intervention strategies. The results of this project will be reviewed and evaluated.
